As one week winds into another, once again, we bring you a review of all the things that have happened here at 2 Rules of Writing during the week of 31 January 2022 to 5 February 2022. A lot of this site is devoted to learning THINGS will make us better writers, but this week we also devoted some serious column inches to how we learn.
The big news this week is the launch of our website update. You’ll find some new features on the homepage, including links in the sidebar to all of our regular contributors, making it easy to find all of their writing on one page. You’ll also notice some new things at the bottom of blog posts. And you’ll find it easier to navigate to the next post or previous post, information about the writer (or for our recurring features, about the feature,) related posts that may also interest you and tags to help you find other posts about similar topics. Keep watching here and on our social media sites for more feature updates as they come, too.
With the website update, the week was a little quieter than usual, but we still brought you some really great work.
Wednesday
“Amy had the same look as the boy every time she talked about literature. It is a state of pure happiness and love.”
On Wednesday Huiwen Shi honored a beloved teacher with her piece, “A Good Teacher is Hard to Find.” Wen, a teacher herself, reminisces about time spent in and out of the classroom with an influential university instructor. After all, how we learn goes on to inform how we teach. She discusses the ways that lines can blur between student and teacher, and considers how that might influence her own teaching. It’s a heartwarming piece for anyone who is a teacher or can recall a favorite teacher.

Thursday
“Our discomfort doesn’t absolve us from having those conversations. Avoiding these conversations doesn’t mean the questions go away.”
On Thursday, Erika took a look at some pending legislation in the Florida House of Representatives and Florida Senate, where legislators are attempting to pass “Don’t Say Gay” legislation under the guise of “parents rights.” In this piece, Erika reminds us that just because a conversation is difficult does not mean we can avoid having it–instead we need to find as many ways to make sure that we’re supported in having those discussions with kids. She also sheds a little light on what can happen when LGBTQ+ topics or LGBTQ+ people are banned from discussions.
How we learn is affected by the resources at our disposal. And when an adult knowingly takes those resources from a child, well…

Friday
“It’s got a little of the classic princess story, a little bad girl, and some sex that is just the right amount of titilating.”-Erika
“But what happens when you crave an unbalanced sound?”-Adam
What book is Erika talking about? And what does Adam mean? Read Friday’s Watch/Listen/Read post to find out. Brass instruments are on both Adam and Erika’s minds this week, although they’ve been listening to different things. Erika was watching flash mobs and other unusual things on YouTube. Adam talks a lot how particular combinations of instruments work together. And there are always recommendations.

Saturday
Spoiler Alert! Caturday is full of questions.
As the weather cooled off again, the Caturday Crew came by with yet another question for our readers. And to occupy as much space in Erika’s lap as possible, too. This week, when they’re not squabbling with each other, they want to know about your feelings on–well. We don’t want to tell you directly, do we? Spoilers.
Go read their whole question and tell them about how you feel.
