Big Cat, Little Cat: Sharing
Timing a Joke
Did you ever go through a period of maybe a few months or maybe… twenty years… in which every time you tried to tell a joke nobody laughed? And it took until you were in your mid-twenties to early thirties before people started actually laughing when you said something you thought was funny and even then it often felt more like a pity-laugh or the kind of laugh you get because people know they’re supposed to laugh when you inflect your voice like you’re saying a punchline and they either don’t get it or don’t like it but still chuckle because that’s what’s socially expected?
Oh. Um. me neither. What’s up with this weather, though? It’s like 50 degrees (10o C) in January. Oh, look! A distraction! *Runs away*
Description
Four identical photographs side by side. In each, two cats are sharing a cushion, talking about their day. On the left, a large orange with darker orange stripes takes up about half of each frame. On the right, a small grey with darker grey stripes takes up less than a quarter of each frame. The large orange looks down at his friend as on the source of a pleasing aroma. A rose, say, or an evergreen wreath. The small grey looks out of the frame as on someone who owes him money and is running through every excuse in the book.

Panel 2
Big Cat: She doesn’t offer you any?
Little Cat: She–Wait, how did you know I was going to say that?
Panel 3
Big Cat: Your nose twitches before a punchline.
Little Cat: I’ve never felt so humiliated.
Panel 4
Big Cat: I think it’s cute.
Little Cat: Don’t patronize me.
