What’s an example of a book that hollowed you out? You got to the good part and you just… couldn’t put it down, but you could barely bring yourself to keep reading. Maybe the emotions were too painful, too close to home. Do you seek out such experiences or not? Is there a genre or type of emotional payoff that’s more likely to have that effect on you? What do you do when it happens to you?
These questions, in some ways, are a more roundabout way of asking: which are the books that matter to you? The ones that have entered your life with the force of a friendship? The ones that have made you change your way of thinking on a subject. Do you have books like this? Which ones? Why?
